Consumer to Creator

It took me a long time to understand that content writing and audience building is a full time job. It takes time, effort, energy and competence to do it.

My respects to people who do it day in and day out πŸ™ Hats-Off !

Here is my perspective:

Writing online is is a marketing function of an internet entrepreneur (and knowledge worker for personal branding). It is easy to belittle creators by saying that they are wasting time on social media all day. It is like saying a marketer, you are wasting time doing your job. This perspective shift came to me only in 2021 when I was reflecting on how I spend my time as a creative and a creator.

Earlier in my time log I use to mark all my writing time as vortex and design time as work but now I am marking writing time as thinking time and design time as doing time. The mind shift is huge. I had to literally shred the old me and restart as a creator who writes for curiosity, fun and mostly as notes to self.

It took me a long time to get this straight in my head.

In case you want to develop your skills in online writing here are some pointers for you πŸ‘‡

1/ If you desire to be a creator, start creating today. There are no shortcuts. You can't run a marathon without starting to walk.

2/ Separate writing and publishing. Both are different activities and must be done at two different times of the day. Writing is all about thinking. Publishing is all about packaging.

3/ If you want to write everyday then you should read a lot. Without good input there is no good output. On a meta level, your assimilation quality determines your expression quality.

4/ If you want to be a creator, then you need to have three things. Principles, Systems and Routines.

Principles guide you to filter out the noise.
Systems help you stay organised and
Routines help you compound efforts.

5/ Don't worry about data when you are a beginner.

  • The first metric is are you writing everyday?
  • The second metric is are you writing well everyday? You are your best critique. If it goes past you, it has already won the first battle.
  • The third metric is are you adding value to your readers everyday?

Just imbibing the above 5 aspects will make you cross the bridge from a consumer to a creator.

πŸ₯‚ to creations!
