Crafting Prompts

Generative AI will be a significant part of our work going forward, whether we like it or not, want it or not, or believe it or not. The faster you adapt, the better your ROI will be.

Here are some tips to help you craft better prompts:

1/ Concise clarity helps. Write in simple English. Get straight to the point. Avoid jargons or acronyms that could confuse the language model.

2/ Context helps. When discussing less common topics, include relevant background information. Context enhances accuracy.

3/ Ask for a desired format. Specify listicle, numbered list, outline etc.

4/ Keywords help scope the response. Include phrases or keywords.

5/ Engage the model in meaningful ways by asking open-ended questions. Avoid yes/no questions.

6/ Break down complex queries into multi-part questions. Helps the model give you more focused and accurate answers.

7/ A well structured prompt gives well structured response. For humans there is no wrong language but for a model there is.

8/ For the first time, we are giving intent as input to a model and the models can't mind-read. So experiment with how you phrase the context. The more detailed the intent is, the response gets better.

9/ Give directions and boundaries to the model. If you want to avoid certain topic, let the model know.

10/ Reflect on the prompts and the results. The pattern of what is working and what is not working will help you refine your approach and quality of future prompts.

🥂 to better prompts!
