On hiring the right design talent: Why I answer every DM
I've lost count of how many DMs I've responded to lately, but I know it's been a lot.
In design leadership, hiring the right team member isn't just a priority, it's THE priority. Finding and hiring the right designer takes enormous effort. Hiring is exhausting. Firing is harder. We don't want to go there.
That's why I put 300% effort into hiring right.
"Hard choices, easy life." I choose the hard path of working relentlessly to find the right people. Answering every DM is that choice. LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Instagram, email. I respond to all.
Our TA (Talent Acquisition) partners streamlined this by creating one unified pipeline. It doesn't matter which role, org, or manager. Everyone interested in ServiceNow goes through the same fair process, regardless of personal connections.

When our HRBP asked about a "referral" candidate, I laughed: "If that's the case, my referrals would run in the hundreds/thousands. Bring it on."
Not everyone is actively looking, and even when they are, stars don't always align. But I believe every open position has someone's name on it. We facilitate that connection.
We're always hiring. If not one org, another needs designers and design managers at every level. Keep the applications coming. We have a dedicated team reviewing them all.
