Procrastination vs Strategic Delay
There is procrastination, and then there is strategic delay.
I used to think I was a procrastinator until I understood what procrastination truly is. When a necessary task evokes unpleasant feelings—boredom, fear, anxiety, overwhelm, confusion, or stuckness—we tend to avoid it repeatedly. But if you postpone tasks for the thrill of deadlines or to let ideas percolate in your subconscious, you're not actually procrastinating.
I belong to the latter club. I harness deadlines to sharpen my focus and enjoy the adrenaline rush of completing work within a strict timeframe, knowing it cannot be delayed a moment longer.
It changes task to task. Any design question I answer instantly. Anything administrative or operations related I push it forever. So you can’t label yourself as one or other. The better question to ask is are you strategically delaying this task or procrastinating?
