OKRs vs V2MOM
I've never been a fan of OKRs. They consistently left me feeling like I was falling short. The concept of thinking big and achieving 70-80% sounds good in theory, but in practice? When you hit 100%, you're left wondering if you aimed too low. It's a lose-lose situation.
Incomplete targets and unfulfilled promises don't sit well with me. I operate with complete clarity, knowing exactly what I can accomplish. Exceeding expectations is a bonus, not a requirement.
That's why I fell in love with Salesforce's V2MOM framework: Vision, Values, Methods, Obstacles, Metrics. It just clicks. Last year, I set a few V2MOMs for different initiatives/programs/orgs and achieved every single one. Not because I'm superhuman, but because we constantly checked in, adjusted methods, and tackled known obstacles. We committed to what was truly achievable, postponing or dropping the rest without feeling like a failure.
For 2025, I took the idea further and crafted a personal V2MOM with methods spread across four pillars: Mind & Body, Learning & Growth, Experiences & Investments, and Connections & Conversations. The metrics are ultra-specific, each project with a name and number attached - like BMI25 for health, BU200 for community etc I outlined 12 projects like this for the entire year.
I'm confident I'll hit these goals because my strategy is ready, planning is complete, and actions are outlined in g365, g52, and g12 systems. Priorities are set with approved budgets for time, money, and energy - even including a time budget for Netflix 🙈
You don't need to be at Salesforce to use V2MOM. A year ago, I wouldn't have known its power. Now, after a full cycle, I'm amazed by its effectiveness and honesty.
Success hinges on clear strategy, consistent action, continuous improvement, and team alignment. V2MOM helps bring a holistic view together. It's not about doing more - it's about doing less, but better. It's about controlling the urge to overcommit and focusing on what's truly possible given your resources.
In my hashtag#pifo masterclass on building and breaking habits, I outlined a high-level V2MOM for 2025 back in September. I didn't call it V2MOM for the participants, but the essence remains the same regardless of the name. It's since evolved into what it is today - a comprehensive blueprint for intentional living and meaningful achievement for 2025.
In a sense V2MOM aligns “Manasa vacha karma” that resonates deeply with who I am and how I want to live.
